3rd Annual Lady Panther Winter Classic at Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville, Kentucky
Opening day at the 3rd Annual Lady Panther Winter Classic prove to be a challenge for some and full of gifts for others. The defending State Champion and 2008 Classic winner Iroquois Lady Raiders went down in the first round. The Fern Creek Lady Tigers behind strong play from Asia Grigsby had their way with Iroquois. Miss Kentucky candidate Ebony Rowe and Paul Dunbar took advantage of their size and quickness against Seneca. Franklin-Simpson was able to come from behind against Louisville Holy Cross to slip past the Lady Cougars. Junior standout Chastity Gooch led the way for the Lady Wildcats. Holy Cross Head Coach Fred Copass says, “We are really missing my top scorer”. Copass was referring to his Senior Guard Robin Deckard. Deckard had an injury this week in practice and doesn’t know the outcome until Monday. The host team PRP, had an opportunity to move into the second round of the winner’s bracket, but fell short against Fleming County. The game of the day had to be Lexington Christian and Louisville Central. The Lady Yellowjackets were in control most of the game until Lexington Christian caused some late turnovers and knocked down some key free throws in the closing seconds of the game. Madison Central and Franklin County may be the teams to beat in this year’s event. Madison Central was in control of their game against Louisville Eastern from the tip off and won pretty easily. Franklin County might be the deepest team in the tourney. The Lady Flyers were too much for Leslie County.
